White Bumps on My Lips – Should I Be Worried?

White spots on the lips are pretty common and usually harmless. In addition to just being there, they are mostly asymptomatic and often go away on their own. However, some of those mystery white bumps on your lips may be a symptom of something more serious. Here are some common causes of those unsightly bumps.

Milia

Milia also referred to as “milk spots,” is the most common cause of white bumps on the mouth. Usually, they can be found on the face but can occur on any other body part. Milia takes the form of small pimples and cysts. They are common in babies, but older individuals can also be affected by this kind of blemish.

Herpes Simplex

If you have sores, it may be a symptom of the herpes simplex virus (HSV) or oral herpes. An infectious disease, herpes simplex starts with a painful outbreak around the lips and looks like small white bumps with a reddish border. If you leave them untreated, those bumps may enlarge and develop into ulcers requiring appropriate medical attention.

Fordyce Spots

If you notice white or yellow bumps inside your cheeks or around the edge of your lips, they may be Fordyce spots. These spots are enlarged oil glands and may also appear in the genital area. They are usually painless and are more of an annoyance than an issue that requires medical treatment.

When to Seek Medical Treatment

White bumps on the lips are a common symptom of a weakened immune system. If you experience a fever, rash, swelling of the neck and jaw, or any abnormal pain, consult with a medical professional. Give the bump two weeks to disappear. If they don’t, this may signal that the breakout on your lips needs proper medical treatment.
