These Breakfast Foods Can Cause Inflammation

Inflammation is constantly occurring naturally in our bodies. For example, if you cut yourself, the area will become red and swollen. This is an immune response to prevent infection and control bleeding.

Because inflammation happens constantly, we don’t want it to stop entirely. However, it becomes a problem when there’s too much of it. Chronic inflammation (CI) is determined by lifestyle influences such as stress, lack of exercise and sleep, and poor nutrition.

Think about the typical American lifestyle, including an inactive desk job, chronic stress, and a highly-processed diet. These are perfect factors that influence chronic inflammation. Over time CI can be linked to various health concerns, including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

To help decrease CI, read on to learn what breakfast foods to avoid.

Cereal

Cereal might have been one of your favorite types of breakfast growing up. However, cold breakfast cereal is high in carbohydrates and added sugars. It’ll start your day by spiking your blood sugar. Instead, opt for more balance with higher fiber and protein options to prevent blood sugar swings. Hot oatmeal is a great alternative.

Processed Meat

Breakfast meat such as bacon and sausage are high in compounds called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). These compounds have been linked to greater levels of inflammation and can be traced back to chronic disease and specific types of cancer.

Try healthier alternatives like ham, turkey bacon, or chicken sausage.

Pancakes and Waffles

Unfortunately for many of us, pancakes and waffles are typically a concentrated source of white flour, and added sugar. They are also very low in fiber or protein for balance. Including lashings of whipped cream or syrup, a diet of pancakes and waffles is the perfect invitation for chronic inflammation.

Eat in Moderation

We can treat ourselves to naughty foods such as those mentioned above once in a while. However, regularly relying on them for an energy boost every morning does not help keep chronic inflammation at bay. Consider trading these foods in for balanced and healthier alternatives.
